The back and forth between Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump might not be great for the MAGA crowd, but it’s been pretty good for X. The app, which used to be known as Twitter, has seen a big spike in user engagement recently. New numbers from Sensor Tower show that as of June 5, X jumped to 23rd place on the U.S. App Store's top charts, up from its usual spot at No. 68 over the last month.
Looking at the last six months, X was hanging around at No. 58 on average. This bounce in rankings is likely because more people are downloading and getting involved with the app.
On Google Play, X also made some gains, moving up about 20 spots from the average of the previous week and 16 spots from the last 30 days.
Sensor Tower estimates that the number of active users on X in the U.S. rose by 6% on June 5, probably thanks to the drama between Musk and Trump that's caught a lot of people's attention. Specifically, they found that active users from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern were up 54% compared to the week before.
Meanwhile, Trump’s own platform, Truth Social, also got a boost from the situation because he shared his thoughts on Musk with his followers. Sensor Tower's data shows that active users on Truth Social in the U.S. skyrocketed by more than 400% compared to the previous week.
Even with Truth Social's jump, X still has a massive user base, boasting about 100 times more active mobile users in the U.S. according to Sensor Tower. The number of active users for both platforms during that 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. window hit a peak not seen in 90 days. As X keeps climbing in the rankings after the Musk-Trump spat, it’s currently the 19th top free iPhone app in the U.S. App Store. On the other hand, Truth Social is ranked 14th in the social networking category but is way down below 150th overall for free iPhone apps in the U.S. App Store.
