The voice of "ChatGPT" has become more human-like.

On Saturday, OpenAI dropped some cool news about an update to the "Advanced Voice Mode" for its ChatGPT chatbot.

This update's all about making ChatGPT's voice sound way more natural and human-like. After the announcement, you can expect ChatGPT's responses to have a more realistic flow, with natural pauses and tone changes. It's even getting better at showing emotions like empathy and sarcasm, according to a piece on Neowin that Qera Tech checked out.

Plus, there's a neat new feature: translation support! Now you can use the Advanced Voice Mode to translate between languages. Just tell ChatGPT to start translating into a specific language, and it'll keep translating everything you say during the chat until you ask it to stop. This basically means you won’t need separate voice translation apps anymore.

Right now, though, this updated Advanced Voice Mode is only available for the paid ChatGPT accounts.

OpenAI mentioned that this latest update might bring some slight drops in audio quality at times, with some unexpected changes in pattern and pitch. But they expect the audio quality will get better as time goes on.

OpenAI first rolled out the Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT last year when they launched the GPT-4o AI model. This mode lets the chatbot respond to voice inputs in just about 232 milliseconds, with the usual response time being around 320 milliseconds, which is pretty close to how quickly humans chat.
