Goodbye numbers! How will you change your usernames for your WhatsApp chat experience?

The latest scoop from the site "WABetainfo," which keeps an eye on all things "WhatsApp," shows that the app plans to switch to usernames instead of using phone numbers. This move would make things a lot faster for users and bring it in line with other messaging apps like "Signal" and "Telegram," which have been doing this for a while.

Even though this feature isn’t available to users yet, the code spotted by WABetainfo shows that WhatsApp is all set to change its look and functions to use usernames instead of phone numbers.

Right now, it’s still a bit unclear how this new system will work since it’s just in the testing phase. But from what the code reveals, if someone doesn’t have your phone number saved, they’ll be able to see your username. That username will be used to find you in WhatsApp’s database and connect, instead of needing a phone number.

An update is on the way this year, especially with more activity happening among WhatsApp's development teams, particularly after they finally launched the long-awaited "iPad" version of the app.
